Magnetic Position Holder

Magnetic Position Holder

The Stanvac International MAGNETIC POSITION HOLDER works like a third hand, holding sheet, tube and section at a fixed angle while the welder tacks the joint. Four sizes are offered from 2.5" to 5", with lift capacity from 2Kg up to 15Kg, and each holds work at 45°, 90° or 135°.

Key Features and Benefits of Magnetic Position Holder

  • Four Models to Choose From: Sizes from 2.5" to 5" depending on job weight and size.
  • Three Working Angles: Holds sheet, tube or other work at 45°, 90° or 135° as needed.
  • Acts as a Third Hand: Positions and holds the job on ferrous surfaces so both hands stay free.
  • Lift Capacity to 15Kg: The 5" model lifts 15Kg and holds 46Kg sideways.
  • No Power Needed: Permanent magnets, so nothing to switch on and nothing to fail.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a magnetic position holder?

A magnetic welding square or angle holder — the arrow-shaped magnet used to hold two workpieces at a set angle during tacking, so the welder does not need a third hand or a full fixture. It holds the geometry while the tack is made, then comes off.

What angles do magnetic position holders provide?

Typically 45°, 90° and 135°, machined into the body so the work locates against a fixed face rather than being judged by eye. Some designs add adjustable angles; fixed-angle magnets are more accurate at the angles they offer.

Can magnetic holders cause arc blow?

Yes, and this is the trade-off welders learn the hard way. A strong permanent magnet next to the joint deflects a DC arc, causing the arc to wander and undercut. Position the magnet away from the immediate weld area, remove it once the tack is made rather than leaving it in place, and if the arc starts wandering, take the magnet off before doing anything else. Stanvac International's guide to arc blow covers the wider causes and remedies.

Do magnetic holders work on stainless steel and aluminium?

No. Austenitic stainless and aluminium are not sufficiently magnetic. Fit-up on those materials needs mechanical clamps, fixtures or tack strips. A magnet that "almost holds" on stainless is worse than no magnet, because it moves under load.

Will a magnetic holder leave residual magnetism in the work?

It can, and it matters where the component will be welded further — residual magnetism is a direct cause of arc blow on subsequent passes — or where magnetic particle inspection is specified. On components with either requirement, use mechanical fit-up.

How should magnetic position holders be maintained?

Keep the faces clean and free of grinding swarf, which sticks to them and destroys the accuracy of the locating faces. Do not drop them or let them slam onto steel, since impact reduces magnet strength permanently. Wipe the faces before each use.
